Oregon House committee members are proposing legislation asking Congress to reimburse taxpayers for the cost of incarcerating undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes in the state.

The legislation, known as House Joint Memorial 14 (HJM 14) was sponsored by Representative Kim Thatcher, and states that each year, the Oregon Department of Corrections – funded by Oregon taxpayers – spends between 33 and 38 million dollars to keep undocumented immigrant criminals incarcerated. This total does not include jails and other correctional facilities.

So far, HJM 14has been introduced to the House. If voted on and approved, it will head to the Senate.

The House Judiciary Committee was scheduled to discuss the memorial this past Friday.
