Today is the one year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Fukushima Daiichi and killed 19,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens.
One year ago at 2:46 p.m. a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit and was the strongest recorded in the country’s history. The powerful quake set off tsunami waves more than 7 feet along Japan’s northeastern coast resulting in over 300,000 people being displaced from their homes.
Listen to Georgia Tech professor Zhigang Peng’s recording of the earthquake. The professor converted seismic waves into audio files - even without visual it is powerful.
