It has been a shaky tournament for the second ranked team in the world according to FIBA.

Spain played less than convincing basketball in their first three victories and then followed that up with losses to Russia and Brazil.

Spain has not supported star Pau Gasol in the first five games. The Lakers forward is tied for first in points with 20.6 points per game.  Other players must step up for Spain now with the quarterfinals starting on Wednesday.

Spain’s loss to Brazil is something that the team and fans wanted because they stay away from the United States until the gold medal game. Spain finished third in their group. If they finished second they could’ve played the USA in the semifinals.

Spain plays France on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. France finished second in their group. The winner of this tilt will meet Russia or Lithuania on Friday in the semifinals.

The other side of the men’s bracket sees the USA play Australia. The winner will meet the victorious team in a South American clash between Brazil and Argentina.
