NARCO BLOG: 13 Mexican Mayors Executed in 2010

During 2010 there have been 13 executions of locally elected throughout the country.  All of them losing their lives in the hands of organized crime in different states of Mexico.

November 8, 2010
The elected mayor of the municipality of Juan Rodriguez Clara, State of Veracruz, Gregorio Barradas Miravete, was killed along with two other people. The political who won election last July 4, was taking office in January.

November 5
The mayor of San Bernardo, Durango, Jaime Lozoya Avila, died of cardiac arrest after being stopped by an armed group, which intercepted the car, taking him out and beating him.  He died later in the hospital. The mayor was in office since August 31st.

September 27
The body of the mayor of Tancítaro, Gustavo Sanchez, was found near Uruapan with another body. The mayor had taken office in December 2009 after the city council resigned under pressure from organized crime.

September 23
Prisciliano Rodríguez Salinas, Mayor of Doctor Gonzalez, was executed in the metropolitan area of Monterrey when he arrived at his ranch in his truck, in the Colonia Loma de los Coyotes, in Doctor Gonzalez, a municipality located where in prior days there were clashes between the army and organized crime. 

September 8
An armed group stormed the town hall of El Naranjo in San Luis Potosi and executed at close range the mayor Alexander Lopez Garcia, 35, who was in a meeting in office .

August 29
Marco Antonio Leal García, mayor of Hidalgo, was executed when he was with his daughter, who was injured. The Attorney General of Justice in the state said that two handguns used to kill the mayor.

August 16
At dawn armed commandos woke the mayor of Santiago, Edelmiro Cavazos Leal, up in his residence and two days later his body was found dead on the road Santiago-Cola de Caballo. The body had three shots, two in the head and once in the chest. He was found handcuffed and blindfolded.

June 30
Nicolás García Ambrosio, Mayor of Santo Domingo, Oaxaca, and a PRD politician was killed as he returned to participate in a protest with the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO). He was attacked on the road near the town of Tonameca, and the town’s treasurer Nicasio Hernandez was wounded.

June 20
Oscar Venancio Rivera, mayor of San Jose del Progreso, Oaxaca, was shot dead while trying to block militants from the United Peoples Assembly for Ocotlán Valley in Defense of Nature and People Empowerment from entering the local school. The head of health, Misael Felix Hernandez, was also killed.

June 19
In the municipality of Guadalupe in the state of Chihuahua, the mayor Jesús Manuel Lara Rodriguez, who was ambushed by surprise in his home where he was shot 11 times.

April 28
The mayor of Zapotitlan Tablas, Guerrero, José Santiago, was shot at close range coming out of a local market..

February 22
The mayor of El Mezquital, Durango, Manuel Estrada Escalante, was inside the restaurant VIP Eden, in the company of a local district legislator when six armed men came charging in and fired at them.

February 17
Ramon Mendivil Sotelo, Mayor of Guadalupe y Calvo, Chihuahua, Valentin Gonzalez Aceves, were killed by an armed group after their truck was shot at. Also injured was the director of public safety. Crisoforo Arellanes Lugo.
