Spain’s Rafael Nadal defeated American John Isner 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3) Sunday in the final of the Western & Southern Open, taking his first title at the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

“This is just amazing,” Nadal said after winning a title that had long eluded him. “This year was the first one that I feel I played well.”

The 27-year-old Nadal has won nine titles this season and has 26 career Masters 1000 titles.

Nadal, who won his 8th French Open title on June 9 and has won 12 major championships, will climb to the No. 2 spot when the new ATP rankings are released on Monday.

Neither player managed to get a break in the match, but the 28-year-old Isner was unable to avoid falling behind in the tiebreakers.

“I knew I had to come to this match and play well, and I thought I played well,” Isner said. “I beat three Top 10 guys. I couldn’t beat four.”

The Cincinnati Masters is one of the biggest hard-court events on the ATP Tour calendar and a key tune-up for the U.S. Open, which starts on Aug. 26.
