Tonight’s match between Mexico and the U.S. should prove to be interesting not only because of the long-standing rivalry, but also because of the players.
Three members of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team, midfielder Joe Corona, defender Omar Gonzalez, and striker Herculez Gomez are Americans born to Mexican parents.
When not playing with the USMNT Gomez actually plays in Mexico’s Liga MX for Santos Laguna. Gonzalez plays for L.A. Galaxy in MLS. Like Gomez, Corona also plays in Liga MX but for Club Tijuana.
As the pressure brought on by heritage wasn’t enough, the rivalry between the U.S. and Mexico is a long-standing one that has resulted in Mexico winning almost twice as often as they’ve lost. However, in a “friendly” this past August, the U.S. pulled out a win, something the Mexican fans were not too happy. At that time, the U.S. had not wona match in Mexio
Tonight, the U.S. will take on Mexico at Azteca Stadium in Mexico for a World Cup qualifier.
