The man jailed for killing the original “50 Cent” is believed to be the same man who killed a pregnant woman and her husband in New York over the weekend.
In 1987, famed criminal Kelvin “50 Cent” Martin was gunned down. Martin was known as “50 Cent” because it was said he would rob anyone for any amount of money, even $.50. Julio “Wemo” Acevedo was convicted of Martin’s murder and spent most of the 1990s in prison.
On Sunday, Acevedo, 44, was reportedly behind the wheel of a BMW when he slammed into a livery cab carrying 21-year-olds Nachman and Raizy Galuber in the Bronx.
The couple, who were part of the city’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, were on their way to the hospital because Raizy, who was 7 months pregnant, was experiencing labor pains.
Sadly, the couple died. Their baby was delivered by emergency c-section, but died the next with doctors citing extreme prematurity as the cause. He weighed just 4 pounds.
After the crash, Acevedo was on the run, but turned himself in on Wednesday in Pennsylvania. Police say he surrendered himself to officers outside a convenience store in Bethlehem, Pa. He has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
Acevedo is also being held without bail on a charge of being a fugitive from justice. He has since claimed he was fleeing a gunman when he crashed into the young couple, though police say there are no reports of shots fired in the area at that time. In February he was charged with driving while under the influence. That case is pending.
The rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has stated he took his stage name from the original 50 Cent as
he is “the kind of person 50 Cent was,” because he provides for himself “by any means.”
