Mexico’s Los Zetas drug cartel is now said to be using encrypted radio frequencies to covertly control their operations.
The drug cartel has been using the encrypted radio network since 2006. It is said to be working in all of Mexico’s 31 states as well as in Guatemala.
A former US Army colonel told the Associated Press that the Zetas are “doing what any sensible military unit would do, They’re branching out into as many forms of communications as possible.”
While the Mexican government claims that such a network even exists, a former member of Los Zetas testified that the cartel uses legally-available parts to build their radio network.
When creating the network, it is said the cartel, which was once the enforcers for the Gulf Cartel before splitting and becoming its rival, even hired communications experts to run part of their operation.
Though attempts have been made to destroy and disrupt the network, the parts are relatively cheap and re replaced quickly, often within days.
