Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who underwent surgery last week, resumed his public activities Tuesday as he presided over a small-business event in Mexico City.

At his first public activity since a July 31 procedure to remove a benign thyroid tumor, the president appeared in good health and gave without difficulty an almost 20-minute speech to inaugurate Entrepreneur Week.

Peña Nieto, 47, observed until Tuesday a period of rest and recuperation between the Central Military Hospital and Los Pinos, his official residence.

“Undoubtedly the economic present and future of our country are tied to the help and confidence we give our entrepreneurs and businessmen,” the president said at Tuesday’s event.

“To the degree that our companies grow bigger and stronger, Mexico will have a more dynamic internal market and, without a doubt, a much solider economy,” he said.

The week dedicated to small business was the perfect time for the president to ask businessmen whose firms are already doing well to lend a helping hand to those just getting started, as well as to launch a new Entrepreneur Support Network.

Entrepreneur Week will continue in the capital until next Saturday, with some 70,000 people expected to take part in the workshops, courses and forums organized to find and promote business opportunities.
