The Mexican government plans to create an “automatic import notification system” covering 113 tariff categories to fight illegal imports of steel products, Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo said.
The system will prevent triangulation, underpricing and incorrect tariff classification for all steel products entering Mexico, Guajardo said in an address at the opening session of the 3rd Mexican Steel Industry Congress.
The “draft legislation covering the system will be posted on the Web site of the Federal Regulatory Improvement Commission, or Cofemer, for public comment,” Guajardo said.
“We must perfect a carbon bond issuance system that does not work. We are doing things that put us at a disadvantage and the United States, China, India and Brazil also do not apply them,” National Iron and Steel Industry Association, or Canacero, president Alonso Ancira said.
