Oribe Peralta scored the only goal here Friday as Mexico topped Cameroon 1-0 to keep pace with host nation Brazil in Group A of the 2014 World Cup.
“El Tri” thoroughly dominated the African side amid a steady downpour at Arena das Dunas in the northeastern city of Natal.
Mexico controlled the ball for much of the first half and had two apparent goals - both by Giovani dos Santos - called back after questionable offside flags.
Samuel Eto’o had the best chance for Cameroon before half-time, but his shot in the 22nd minute went wide of the net.
Peralta scored the match winner in the 61st minute, hammering home the rebound off a shot by Dos Santos.
Mexico’s defense then took charge, though they still needed a big save by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa on Benjamin Moukandjo in stoppage time to seal the victory.
Next up for Mexico is Brazil, who beat Croatia 3-1 in Thursday’s tournament opener.
