Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Sunday defended his ambitious reform plans at the Boao Forum, known as the “Asian Davos.”

The reform plans will “unleash the economic potential” of Mexico and make it more attractive to Asian investors, the president said.

Mexico is “immersed in an internal transformation process” supported by stability and solid fiscal management, with a public sector deficit of zero in 2013 and public debt of less than 35 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), Peña Nieto told the Asian business leaders who attended his presentation.

Latin American countries are interested in expanding ties with Asia’s dynamic economies, the president said.

The region offers Asia a number of advantages, including democratic governments, falling poverty rates and narrowing inequality, Peña Nieto said.

“We are living through times of change in international geopolitics. In a multipolar world, not only are there emerging countries, but there are also emerging blocs of nations, and the best examples are precisely Asia and Latin America,” Peña Nieto said.
