Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto is “shortening the international tour scheduled” for this week to focus on overseeing recovery efforts in states recently affected by hurricanes, the Office of the President said in a statement.
The Oct. 4-5 visit to Singapore at the invitation of Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam is being cancelled, Peña Nieto said during a trip Saturday to the Tierra Caliente region of Guerrero state, the state most affected by the hurricanes that hit Mexico earlier this month.
The international tour is being adjusted to include just the stop in Indonesia for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, forum, Peña Nieto said.
“I want to dedicate this week to visiting several other states that were not affected to the same extent as Guerrero, but also, regrettably, sustained some damage in very specific places,” Peña Nieto said.
Hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid, which hit Mexico simultaneously, killed 147 people and left 309 cities in 18 states under natural disaster declarations.
