Mexican federal police officers returning from routine patrolled were ambushed in Zitacuaro, Michoacan and twelve were killed. Michoacan, is the home state of Mexican President Felipe Calderon and the beloved monarch butterfly as well as home to the violent drug cartel La Familia.
Some assailants were killed and others wounded but remain unidentified. It is assumed they are members of the La Familia cartel that dominate the drug business in this western Mexico state. Drug-gang violence has been sweeping this colonial capital since President Calderon waged war on nacro-traffickers in 2006. Nationwide 23,000 Mexican citizens, mostly security officials, have been killed since 2006.
The Familia cartel continues to battle other drug cartels to maintain their dominance in controlling trafficking routes. This ambush is reminiscent of the 2009 highway attack where 12 federal officers bodies were dumped along a Michoacan highway
