Boxer Francisco Javier “Frankie” Leal died in the United States of a brain injury suffered during a bout last weekend in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, his promoters said. He was 26.
The Mexican received emergency medical treatment in the ring after being knocked out by countryman Raul Hirales in the eighth round of Saturday’s fight in Baja California Sur state.
He was then transferred to the state capital of La Paz and later to San Diego, California, where he died on Tuesday, Mexico’s Zanfer Promotions said in a statement.
Leal, who fought in the junior featherweight division, had a career record of 20 wins, 13 by knockout, and eight losses.
The Mexican had continued his boxing career even after being hospitalized following a knockout loss to Russia’s Evgeny Gradovich in March 2012.
