Lionel Messi has broken Barcelona’s all-time career scorer record after scoring three goals in Barca’s 5-3 win over Granada on Tuesday.
Before the hat trick, which was Leo’s eighth of the season, Cesar Rodriguez had held the all-time scorer title for 57 years. While helping to keep Barca in the championship, Messi beat Rodriquez’s record of 232 goals and finished the Granada match with 234 goals in his career.
Barcelona’s coach, Pep Guardiola, told the Associated Press, “We are before the best player in absolutely every facet. He is capable of everything that a football player must do and he does it every three days. I am sorry for those who want to dethrone him, but he is simply different from all the rest. Messi has entered the history of the club at just 24 years of age. If he continues like this in the coming years, he will score so many goals that he will never be surpassed.”
The Argentina-born striker broke another record earlier this month, when he became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League match, helping Barcelona win 7–1 against Bayer Leverkusen.
After his team’s match against Granada, Coach Guardiola added that Messi is to soccer what Michael Jordan was to basketball.
