The latest edition of El Clasico lived up to the expectations.
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo each twice in a 2-2 draw on Sunday at the Camp Nou in Barcelona.
Messi and Ronaldo are the two best players in the world and most prolific goal scorers. Their rivalry as players takes a new turn each week and Sunday was no different.
Ronaldo gave Real Madrid a lead with a wicked shot that beat Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes near post. It was a signature goal by Ronaldo but the goalkeeper should have done better.
Messi equalized eights minutes later as he pounced on a defensive error by Real Madrid defender Pepe. The Argentinian slotted home the shot, beating goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Messi netted a marvelous second goal on a free kick from about 25 yards away. It was a perfect bending free kick that went right over the wall and Casillas had no chance.
Ronaldo responded with his second goal after receiving a through ball from Mesut Ozil and calmly beating Valdes with about 25 minutes to go.
Each team had chances in the end to take the three points but no one could break through.
Barcelona can be satisfied with a draw as they still hold an eight-point lead over Real Madrid in the La Liga table. There is still a long season ahead, but other Real Madrid players must start playing better.
