Messi, Alves Lead Barça to 2-0 Win Over Manchester City

Leo Messi converted a penalty early in the second half and Dani Alves scored in the final minute of regulation here Tuesday to give Barcelona a 2-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 contest.

The visitors controlled the match from the outset, but it wasn’t until the 54th minute, after City’s Martin Demichelis was sent off for tackling Messi, that Barça took the lead.

The crowd in the Etihad was livid at the call and City coach Manuel Pellegrini blasted the referee in his post-match press conference.

Forced to play down a man for the rest of the match, the Citizens struggled to maintain their defensive shape as second-half substitute Neymar led the charge for the Catalan club.

City will face an almost impossible task overcoming the 2-0 deficit when it travels to Barcelona for the second leg., going to Camp Nou.

Paris Saint-Germain inflicted an embarrassing 4-0 home defeat on Bayer Leverkusen in Tuesday’s other Champions League tie.
