Sunday gunmen of the drug cartel killed the mayor of a small town in Tamaulipas. Marco Antonio Leal was driving through the countryside when gunman, shot, and killed the mayor, slightly wounding his 4-year-old daughter.
Tamaulipas in northern Mexico has become one of the most dangerous states in the country this year. Drug cartel violence has been escalating as the two rival gangs, Gulf cartel and its former military wing, the Zeta’s fight over the coveted smuggling routes into the US. The region has recently seen another mayor killed (see related stories) two car bomb explosions, and the recent find of 72 migrant workers bodies on a ranch (see related story). It is not immediately clear why Leal was attacked.
President Felipe Calderon is under strong pressure to address the violence in the area. Many are calling for a change in government strategy against the drug cartels.
“This cowardly crime and the reprehensible violent events recently in the region strengthen our commitment to continue fighting the criminal groups that seek to terrify families” in Tamaulipas, Mr. Calderón said in a statement.
