Five skeletons were unearthed from a clandestine grave in the central Mexican municipality of Tlalmanalco, a source in the federal Attorney General’s Office said Thursday.
Two additional skeletons were then found in the clandestine grave in the central Mexican municipality of Tlalmanalco, bringing to seven the total number recovered so far, the capital district attorney said Thursday.
Personnel from his office, the Mexico state government and the federal Attorney General’s Office are searching for more remains at the site on the La Mesa ranch, Rodolfo Rios told a press conference.
Two residents of Tlalmanalco, which lies about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Mexico City, have been arrested, he said.
The grave was discovered Wednesday thanks to “the exchange of information” between his office and the federal AG’s office, Rios said.
Tests to identify the remains and determine the time and cause of death will require at least two days to complete, the capital’s top prosecutor said.
The results of those tests will allow authorities to determine “scientifically whether the bodies found correspond” to any of the 12 young people who were abducted May 26 from a Mexico City bar, Rios said.
He said he briefed the families of the missing youths about the status of the investigation when they burst into the DA’s office ahead of Thursday’s press conference.
As authorities have yet to begin the task of identifying the skeletons, “it is very premature” to suggest any connection with the case of the 12 people who disappeared three months ago from the bar, a source in the federal AG’s office told Efe earlier Thursday.
The burned body of a suspect in the mass abduction was discovered last month in Morelos state, south of Mexico City.
“Dax Rodriguez Ledezma was the subject of an order to locate and appear issued by ... the capital’s special prosecutor’s office for kidnappings as the person likely responsible for the kidnapping of 12 people at the Heaven bar,” the Mexico City government said in a statement at the time of the gruesome discovery.
