New York Jets quarterback Mark Sánchez said he was really close to taking a swing at coach Rex Ryan, who was thinking about benching him.
Sánchez told GQ Magazine that last season, after embarrassing losses to the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots, coach Ryan begun speculating about sending the star quarterback to the sidelines, and even go so far as asking backup quarterback Mark Brunell to practice more with the team’s other starters, decision that made Sánchez think about fist fighting the coach.
But he never did, due in part to the advice of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who apparently cooled Sánchez down after a tantrum at practice; “On the practice field, when Brunell walked into the huddle, Sanchez pushed him away. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer approached. He repeated that Ryan wanted Brunell to take extra reps. “I was like, ‘He can come tell me,’ ” Sanchez says. “And [Schottenheimer] is like, ‘Come on, man, don’t do that.’”
