The red English team Manchester United has bumped Real Madrid as the fútbol brand with the most value, according to Brand Finance PLC.
According to a study conducted by Brand Finance PLC, Manchester United’s brand valuation of $642 million, grew 11% since last year, and is $17 million greater than that of Real Madrid, and $31 million bigger than the current champions and world favorites Barcelona FC.
“The commercial team at United have developed such a compelling and well-protected brand that global partners are willing to pay premium sums to be affiliated with the champions,” said Brand Finance, which advises companies like brewer SABMiller Plc and bank Standard Chartered Plc.
Earlier this month the team announced a sponsorship agreement for its training apparel worth $60 million with logistics company DHL.
But while Manchester United may have a stronger brand than Real Madrid and Barcelona FC, the red team, owned by the U.S.-based Glazer family is not the biggest money-maker. In terms of revenue, according to a list published by accountant Deloitte LLP in February, Manchester is behind both Real Madrid and Barça. Madrid announced record sales of $654 million last week, more than any other team. United had revenue of $516 million, according to a Sept. 1 filing.
