Nokia’s first Windows Smart Phone will be called “Lumia,” which is an old Spanish word for “Prostitute.”
Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia presented last week their first two smart phone models equipped with Microsoft’s operative system, the Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710.
Lumia, a term coined by 20th Century artist Thomas Wilfred to refer to ‘art created from light,’ is incidentally also an old Spanish synonym of ‘prostitute.’
Nokia was reportedly aware, but according to spokespeople for the company, more than 60% of Spanish consumers who participated in their market studies associated ‘lumia’ with “light” and “style,” and only a few were actually aware of the other definition.
Our Spanish speaking staff didn’t know the word, it apparently has gypsy roots, and hasn’t been used for quite some time; they still found a little weird that the Nokia peeps approved the prostitute phone when the company’s slogan is “Connecting People.”
