Mexican-American super group Los Tigres del Norte will perform in a free concert to promote the passage of comprehensive immigration reform.
The norteño group along with other performers will take the stage on the National Mall during the weekend of October 5 for the “Camino Americano: Concert and March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect.” The weekend will consist of marches, rallies and conclude with a star-studded concert on October 8.
The group issued the following statement around their performance, “This is a crucial time in the continued fight for immigrant rights, and we are looking forward to raising our voices alongside the thousands of our community that will come from across the nation.”
The group has sold over 32 million records since they started in the late 1960’s and have won five Latin Grammys.
Some 20 immigrant rights organizations, over 200 religious leaders and hundreds of immigration supporters are expected on the National Mall to urge Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
This past summer the Senate passed a bipartisan immigration bill that allows for a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented as well as increased border security. The Republican-controlled house has not taken up the legislation or proposed any bill of their own, in essence stalling out the initiative for immigration reform.
