A new term has emerged on Arizona’s political platform, Anchor Babies which refers to the children born to undocumented citizens in the U.S. This upcoming fall Arizona’s Republicans will likely introduce a legislation that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona to parents who are not legal U.S. citizens. Russel Pearce, state senator has been a major driving force behind this bill which intends to make the road to citizenship for the new generation very difficult and eliminate the “Anchor” that often keeps undocumented immigrants in this country, their children.
This move by Arizona’s politician is undoubtedly supported by the majority of the public. A poll conducted by Rasmussen found that 58% of American think illegal immigrants whose children are born in the U.S. should not receive citizenship; support for that stance is 76% among Republicans. For the proponents of this bill, the 14th amendment which states that “All persons, born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States” is outdated and needs revision according to our times.
