Liverpool has no interest in selling Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, the Premier League club’s managing director said Thursday.

“Last summer he signed a new four-year contract and we have no desire to sell Luis. He is a fantastic player and a great contributor to our team,” Ian Ayre said, reacting to media reports that the 26-year-old forward might be available.

Suarez, who leads the Premier League in scoring with 22 goals, told an interviewer in Uruguay that while he is happy playing for the Reds, an approach from a club “with more prospects of competing in international club competition games” would be “very welcome.”

The striker is in Uruguay preparing for his national team’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

“We are very pleased to have Luis and long may that continue,” Ayre said, noting that Suarez “says in the same interview that he feels he is in an elite team at Liverpool.”

The Reds are currently in seventh place in the Premier League, three away from the top four finish that would ensure the club a spot in the Champions League.

Liverpool last played in the Champions League in 2009-2010.
