FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who was injured in the first leg of Spain’s Supercopa competition against Atletico Madrid and did not play in the second half, has been diagnosed with a thigh bruise, the club’s doctors said Thursday.
Barcelona team physician Ricard Pruna immediately determined that the four-time world player of the year had not suffered a muscle tear, but the Argentine international was replaced by Cesc Fabregas as a precautionary move.
Barça’s big acquisition of the summer, Brazilian phenom Neymar, scored midway through the second half of Wednesday night’s Supercopa match to salvage a 1-1 tie for the defending La Liga champs against a dynamic Atletico Madrid, who got a goal from newly acquired striker David Villa.
The second and final leg will be played Aug. 28 at Barcelona’s Nou Camp.
Messi is in doubt for Barcelona’s second Spanish-league match on Sunday against Malaga. The Catalans opened their 2013-2014 La Liga campaign last Sunday with a 7-0 demolition of Levante.
