It was a first for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who scored five goals in Wednesday’s match against Bayer Leverkusen.
With his five goals, the Argentine forward became the first player to score that many in a Champions League match and only the forth player in history to do so in a European Cup match, becoming the first in more than 30 years as well.
The 24-year-old may have helped Barça defeat Leverkusen in a 7-1 defeat, but Leverkusen’s coach Robin Dutt was quick to acknowledge both Barça and Messi’s skill, telling reporters, “Without Messi, Barça is the best team, and with him, they are in another galaxy.”
As for Leo, he says he’s just so “very happy.”
With their win against Leverkusen, Barça now advances to the quarterfinals.
