Civil rights group LatinoJustice PRLDEF is calling for the congressional district of former Rep. Anthony Weiner be dissolved to allow for more minority political power.
Weiner resigned when it was discovered he sent lewd photos to young women over the internet. The district he represented is one of New York’s most diverse and those in favor of the dissolution of the district to make way for the expansion of neighboring districts.
“Weiner’s departure presents probably the best opportunity to not only shore up the Latino and African American representation, but to do so with the least disruption,” said Juan Cartagena, president and general counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF.
“I’m not asking for a handout,” Cartagena said. “I’m asking for a recognition of the demographic reality.”
Though Weiner’s district is mostly white, the recent U.S. Census showed a 27 percent growth in the Hispanic population between 2000 and 2010.
