A New Mexico man was sentenced last week after being convicted of tattooing a toddler.
Cruz Tenorio of Kewa Pueblo, New Mexico was sentenced to six months in federal prison on Tuesday for tattooing the letter “I” on his 3-year-old nephew’s arm with unsterilized, homemade instruments.
He had no formal training in the art of tattooing and took no precautions to prevent infection.
Once released from prison, Tenoria, 29, will be transferred to a halfway house, where he will remain for six months.
Tenorio will also be financially responsible for any medical or psychological services the 3-year-old may need, including removal of the tattoo.
Tuesday’s sentence comes after Tenorio pled guilty to child abuse in March.
The “I” he tattooed on the boy was said to stand for Tenorio’s dead mother.
