A homeless man living on the streets of Southern California has been accused of using a stolen identity to receive as much as $100,000 in medical care, but the perhaps the most remarkable aspect of his deception is the fact that he was using a woman’s identity.
For the last 13 years, the 51-year-old homeless man has used the identity of Perla Aldama Serrano, and used the stolen identity to run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. Using the name, the man obtained a healthcare card, and used it in hospital in San Clemente, Laguna Beach, and Mission Viejo.
Last week, a sheriff’s deputy saw “Serrano” sleeping in a public area and grew suspicious of the man when he gave a name that did not match a hospital tag he was wearing.
Further investigation revealed that he has as many as 10 aliases, though the real Serrano is the only known victim.
Perla Serrano is said to have gone to court numerous times over the years as she has received a number of arrest warrants for things the homeless man has done.
Currently being held in lieu of $20,000 bail, the man now faces charges of felony unauthorized use of personal identifying information, false impersonation, second-degree burglary and grand theft.
