A one-month-old Pennsylvania baby is in critical condition after her father became frustrated and burned her with hot water.
Jorge Colon, 20, of Oxford was arrested on Sunday after police say he grew frustrated with his colicky newborn daughter Kiara while trying to give her a bath.
On Saturday, Colon told police he was washing Kiara in the kitchen sink while her mother was taking a shower. Frustrated by his fussy daughter, Colon told police he turned the water from warm to the hottest setting. He said when the baby began screaming he took her out of the water and wrapped her in a towel. When the mother came into the room however, the baby’s skin had already begun to peel.
The child was taken to Jennersville Regional Hospital and is now in critical condition at the at Crozer-Chester Medical Center’s Burn Unit. She suffered burns on 40 percent of her body, stretching from the right side of her neck down to her right foot.
Colon has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering the welfare of a child. He sits in Chester County prison in lieu of $125,000 bail.
Oxford Police Chief John Slauch told CBS Philly this was “one of the worst cases of child abuse” he has ever seen in his 38 years as a police officer.
