On Tuesday, a woman convicted of stabbing her ex-boyfriend with an ice pick was sentenced to 17 years in jail.
In August of 2010 Elizabeth Cuevas Villanueva, now 49, hid in the backseat of her ex-boyfriend’s Mercedes-Benz while it was parked in the lot of Messiah Lutheran Church in Orange County.
When the man returned to his vehicle and drove away, Villanueva began stabbing him in the head and shoulders with an ice pick.
Attempting to park his car and flee his attacker, the man crashed into a tree. He was able to escape the vehicle, and Villanueva was said to have fled on foot.
Two witnesses gave chase. Villanueva threatened the people, even telling them she had a gun. Police detained her and recovered the weapon.
Villanueva pled guilty to one felony count of attempted murder with sentencing enhancements, two felony counts of aggravated assault and domestic battery.
Villanueva and the victim, then 48, had once lived together, but broke up about four months before the attack.
