At around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, authorities say Joseph Cararra drunkenly plowed his vehicle into a set of gets at the Volusia County Jail.
The Port Orange, FL man was not about to stop however, and continued his early-morning drunk drive. After the jail incident, the 22-year-old reportedly took of at a high rate of speed on the aptly named International Speedway Boulevard.
Less than an hour later, at 4:20 a.m., Cararra, still driving his maroon Toyota pick-up truck, nearly killed a Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Gering. Deputy Gering stated that the suspect’s truck was coming right at him and his cruiser, but that the driver of the vehicle turned the wheel at the last second, avoiding a collision with the deputy.
Gering was able to stop the driver and that’s when he realized it was Cararra, the man he had just heard a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) about.
When questioned, the intoxicated young driver told Gering admitted he had been drinking at a bar, and said though his friends were with him when he left the bar, he dropped them off on the side of the road at some point and continued to drive. He also admitted he drove on the prison grounds, but denied he slammed into the property’s northern gate.
In the end, Carrara was arrested and taken to the very jail he drove into. He’s charged with criminal mischief with damage to property, reckless driving, DUI, and trespassing.
