CNN is reporting that the former Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford has proposed to his Argentine mistress, Maria Belen Chapur in Buenos Aires.  Argentine media is reporting the engagement happened last Wednesday at the Bella Italia Grill.

This Latin love affair cost the high-profile, married Republican his political career back in 2009, an affair that reportedly started in 2001 in Uruguay.

This relationship broke the former Governor’s marriage to Jenny Sanford, when in June of 2009, Sanford left the state for five days and told his staff he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, but he was really in Argentina visiting Chapur. He returned and held a press conference at which he confessed “I have been unfaithful to my wife.” The couple, parents of four children, divorced soon after.  In later interviews he identified Chapur, 43, as his ‘soul mate’.

Sanford, 52 also faced impeachment hearings after the state’s legislature investigated the use of public assets for his travels.  The hearings resulted in the former Governor having to reimburse the state $74,000 for travel and personal expenses.

Chapur is an Argentine divorced mother of two who works in Buenos Aires as a commodity broker.  The State newspaper published the star-crossed lovers emails when the scandalous love affair broke, emails that spoke of a deep connection between the two.

“My heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul,” said Sanford in one of them.
