Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, 56, has informed President Obama and her staff that she plans to resign from the Obama administration, and will not serve as Labor Secretary for the President’s second term.

Solis is the daughter of immigrant parents her father is Mexican and her mother Nicaraguan.  The California native was the first Latina elected to the California Senate in 1994, serving there for six years.  She was elected to Congress in 2000 where she made a name for herself on labor and environmental issues.  Solis has been Labor Secretary since 2009.

The President accepted her resignation and identified Solis as a “tireless champion for working families.”
