The U.S. Department of Labor has announced it is providing $9 million in grant funding to help reduce child labor in Colombian mines.
The Labor Department noted that thousands of children work in Colombia’s mining industry thereby exposed to injuries, toxic environments and explosions. Colombian non-government organizations and child advocacy organizations are invited to apply to receive funding support from the $9 million in grants available.
The U.S. government hopes to increase the educational opportunities for these Colombian children and help their families, so children do not need to work in mining.
