JUST IN:  U.S. Defeats Mexico Securing Spot for 2014 World Cup, Mexico Maybe Out of World Cup Play

The U.S. men’s soccer team defeated Mexico 2-0 thereby securing a spot for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.  The loss for Mexico severely hurts their chances of making it to the World Cup.

Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan scored the goals for team U.S.  The U.S. had to wait for the Honduras v Panama match to see if Honduras would either win or tie to secure their ticket to Brazil.  Honduras tied.

Mexico now drops to fifth place and only the top three teams are guaranteed an invitation to the World Cup.  This loss comes on the heels of the firing of coach Jose Manuel de la Torre and a defeat at home in a World Cup qualifier game to Honduras.

The Columbus Creak Stadium in Columbus, Ohio where the match was held has not been a lucky place for Mexico.  U.S. has beaten Mexico in their World Cup qualifiers in 2001, 2005 and 2009 and now 2013.  Every time the same score – can anyone say its jinxed for Mexico.

The World Cup begins in June 2014.
