Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated the #1 player Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in four sets. Nadal ranked #2 in the world won in 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1 sets.  This is his second U.S. Open win with the last one coming in 2010 when he was ranked number one.

The two champions have met 36 times before but this was just the third time in four years that the two have met in a U.S. Open final. This win gives Nadal his 13th Grand Slam title.

It was just a year ago that many questioned whether Nadal would ever be competitive and whether he would come back from a knee injury.  Earlier this year he lost at Wimbledon in early play to a relatively unknown player Steve Darcis.  In August he regained the No. 2 spot in ATP rankings

The 27-year-old was cheered up by none other than Spain’s Queen Sofia and of course his entire family.  He collected a $3.6 million check for his winning efforts.
