UPDATE:  President Obama at 11:35 (EST) confirmed from the White House that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. forces in a special operation authorized by him earlier today.  He reminded the nation that bin Laden had openly declared war on the U.S. and that a top priority of the war was not only against Al Quaida but to kill or capture its leader Osama bin Laden.

The President was light on details as to how they determined where bin Laden was and who had provided that information.  He did confirm that last week he and his military advisers felt they had enough information as to bin Laden’s where abouts somewhere in Pakistan, enough to authorize a strike on the compound he was believed to be in.  The President gave that authorization to strike today and a special team launched the strike and engaged in a ‘fire fight’ that resulted in bin Laden’s death and the taking of his body by troops.

President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton have both issued statement on the matter.  Bush also informed the public that the President had called him earlier in the day to inform him of bin Laden’s death, which he described as a “momentous achievement”.

ORIGINAL STORY:  Numerous sources are announcing that the elusive Osama bin Laden, master mind of 9/11, has been killed and his body is in the hands of the U.S. military.  The President is expected to confirm these reports shortly from the White House.  It is being reported that bin Laden was killed outside of Islamabad in a mansion he was holded up in.

Many things remain unclear, specifically how bin Laden was killed and why the U.S. is in possession of his body.

Osama bin Laden was born on March 10, 1057 and has been on the U.S. Ten Most Wanted List since the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings that he was said to be behind.  He has been sought aggressively since 2001 when it was believed he was the mastermind of the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.
