The Papal conclave has chosen the new Pope to lead the 1.2 billion Catholics in the world and he hails from Latin America. This is the first pope outside of Europe and the first from Latin America.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina will now be known as Pope Francis I (Papa Francisco Primero) appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basicilia after the pronouncement ‘Habemus Papum’ – “We have a pope.” He spoke in Latin, Italian and in Spanish.
This pope is the 266th successor Pope to the Catholic churches original apostle St. Peter. White smoke appeared at 7.:05 p.m. local Vatican time indicating 115 cardinals had been made after five rounds of cloistered voting.
The papal conclave was called after Pope Benedict XVI, due to his health and age, resigned last month becoming Pope Emeritus.
