Ohio kidnapper and sexual predator Ariel Castro has killed himself in prison by hanging. Castro was convicted last month on over 300 charges related to the kidnapping, sexual abuse and imprisonment of three girls in his Cleveland, Ohio home.
The 53-year-old Puerto-Rican man was being held at the Correction Reception Center in Orient, Ohio. Prison authorities found him hung in his cell at 9:20 EST and tried to resuscitate him. He was transported to the Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m. according to local reports.
Castro was facing life in prison plus a 1,000 years after pleading guilty to 937 counts related to the kidnapping and sexual abuse of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus for more than a decade. The women escaped on May 6 and were finally able to tell of their enslavement. They were kidnapped between 2002 and 2004.
Castro is the father of Berry’s 6-year-old daughter.
JoEllen Smith of the Ohio Department of Corrections released the following statement:
Inmate Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 pm at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals. Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation.
