UPDATE: The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the Pacific shore of Guatemala has reportedly left 8 dead and Guatemala under the highest level of disaster alert. The earthquake measured 20 miles deep and was near the city of Champerico. The government of President Otto Perez Molina is assessing damages and may revise the death toll later.
There are reports of a school collapsing in the town of San Marcos which rests 80 miles north of the epicenter.
JUST IN: The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 7.4 magnitude earthquake off the Pacific shore of Guatemala, near Chiapas Mexico. The quake was reported some twenty minutes ago at 10:35 a.m. 35 miles southwest from Retalhuleu, Guatemala and some 38 miles southeast of Chiapas, Mexico.
This is a developing story with aftershocks being reported by both countries. Strong tremors have been felt in Guatemala City, San Salvador, El Salvador and Mexico City, Mexico.
