Chicago police are reporting twelve people were shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, including a 3-year-old. The shootings occurred around 10:15 p.m. at the basketball court of the Cornell Square Park.
Early reports indicate a “dreadlocked” gunmen fired shots at the park goers from a gray sedan. The park is located at 51st and Wood.
The neighborhood extends from 39th to 55th Streets between Halsted and the railroad tracks along Leavitt Street, just south and west of the former Union Stock Yard that was until the 1950s the largest livestock yards and meatpacking center in the country. Small numbers of Mexican immigrants entered Back of the Yards and neighboring Bridgeport as early as World War I, and during the 1970s, it gradually became a largely Latino community with a minority of African Americans.
The Chicago Fire Department indicates all the victims were taken to local hospitals with four of the victims in critical condition.
There are no suspects in custody in this developing story.
The city reported more homicides than any city in the nation in 2012, surpassing even New York. Police have blamed gang violence for the surge in killings, and an abundance of stolen guns.
