Eduardo Carvalho, who owned the Ultima Hora News Web site and had been receiving death threats since last year, was gunned down in the Brazilian city of Campo Grande, police said Thursday.

Carvalho, a retired police officer who served as editor-in-chief of the news Web site, was shot three times on Wednesday night by two gunmen riding on a motorcycle.

The gunmen were waiting for Carvalho outside his residence in Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul state, which is on the border with Paraguay and Bolivia, police said.

The 52-year-old Carvalho and his wife had just driven up to their house when the gunmen opened fire.

Carvalho, who had survived an earlier attack, specialized in publishing stories critical of politicians and police in Mato Grosso do Sul.
