In celebration of Machu Picchu’s Centennial—one hundred years of the discovery of the city, Cuzco has organized many festivities including, weeks of craft fairs, talks, excursions, concerts, food fairs, parades, awards ceremonies, dance exhibits, cocktail parties, art festivals, street fairs, and much more.
President Alan García climbed to the site to inaugurate the festivities the 62-year old president told visitors he once lived for 40 days in Machu Picchu, in his 20’s, the late 60’s. “There were a lot of young foreign visitors, Argentinean songs, sambas, Spaniards who sang songs from the Civil War… We had long debates over politics, philosophy, anarchism, Marxism. It was a beautiful experience, one of those that mark your life,” he said.
