U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Friday urged the House of Representatives to vote quickly for a comprehensive immigration reform like the one passed by the Democratic-majority Senate last month.
Immigration reform is not only a matter of fairness, but “a public safety issue writ large,” the vice president said during a meeting with law enforcement officials from around the United States.
“Fixing the broken immigration system is going to allow…allow law enforcement to focus on catching criminals and keeping neighborhoods safe,” Biden said.
The vice president said the current proliferation of state measures to combat illegal immigration is not working and the best solution is comprehensive immigration reform.
He praised the bill passed by the Senate on June 27, which offers a path to legalization and eventual citizenship for some 11 million undocumented immigrants, strengthens border security and establishes controls for any future waves of immigrants, among other elements.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has not yet introduced its own reform bill, and the consensus is that it will not be ready before next month’s legislative recess.
