U.S. Vice President Joe Biden received Friday the leader of the Cuban dissident group Ladies in White, Berta Soler, to express his support for civil society and human rights on the Caribbean island.

Biden’s office announced the White House meeting with a tweet on his official Twitter account.

A photo posted with the message shows Biden and Soler seated on a sofa, looking relaxed and smiling during their discussion.

The meeting lasted some 30 minutes and Soler was accompanied by Jorge Mas, president of the Cuban American National Foundation, Biden’s office said in a brief statement.

During the meeting the vice president applauded Soler’s courage.

The U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman received the Ladies in White leader on Thursday in Washington to review the human rights’ situation in Cuba.

Sherman praised Soler for her leadership, a State Department spokesperson told a press conference after the meeting.

Ladies in White is a group of women who united to demand freedom for their husbands, children and fellow members of the opposition - the so-called Group of 75 - who were given long prison sentences in Cuba during the “Black Spring” of March 2003.

The last Group of 75 members still in jail were freed in March 2011. One died behind bars during a hunger strike.
