A man accused of molesting a young child before fleeing the country has been arrested in Guatemala after 18 years on the run.
After being taking into custody last week, Jeffrey Reed Parish, 65, was sent back to the United States to face charges of lewd acts on a child and oral copulation stemming from the alleged molestation of a 4-year-old California girl in 1994.
Parish was living under the alias “Blake”, with no one who knew him in Guatemala knowing whether that was a first or last name.
Though he said he initially lived in Mexico when he fled the U.S., Parish lived most of the last 18 years in Panajachel, Guatemala, which is about 90 miles from Guatemala City. He was arrested at his Panajachel home and reportedly did not resist arrest.
Parish was last seen just before he was scheduled to face trial in Santa Barbara Municipal Court in March of 1994.
Though the trial was for the case involving the 4-year-old, officials believe Parish may have had additional victims.
FBI Special Agent Ingerd Sotelo and a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s detective have been credited with finding the wanted man.
