Born Demetria Devonne Lovato, the actress/singer of Mexican, Italian and Irish decent could have lost the starring role on her Disney show “Sonny with a Chance.”
After leaving the Jonas Brothers’ Live in Concert Tour to “seek medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time,” the teen queen left her Disney comedy show hanging.
On “Sonny with a Chance,” Lovato played Sonny Monroe, a teenage girl who moves to California with her mother after she lands a role on her favorite show “So Weird.”
Disney bosses have now released that “Sonny with a Chance” will be renamed “So Random” for its third season.
When Lovato first sought treatment, Disney insisted that her departure from the show was only temporary, and simply had season two written around her absence. Now, with the name change, it appears far less likely that she will return, despite officially checking out of rehab last month.
Regarding the change to the show, actor Brandon Smith:
The thing is, with a show like ours, and any great show that I’ve seen in the past, like The Wire or Seinfeld, each season you focus on a different concept, a different theory, or maybe a different character’s background.
Season one we established who we were - you saw some mini sketches, you saw who the characters were and how they mingled and intertwined. Season two you were able to see more of the relationship between Sonny and Chad and how they got into it and how we didn’t like it, and you saw some of Mackenzie Falls and that aspect.
And now this season you’ll be able to see So Random, see why we are where we are today in regards to being the teen idols that we are. You’ll be able to see how we bring the funny (sic) every week.
While it is not completely clear why Lovato entered rehab, the 18-year-old reportedly punched a back-up dancer in the face just prior to her admittance. Her lawyers have since settled the case.
